The Young Turks: October 09, 2013

Cenk Uygur hosting from YouTube Space LA. The government shutdown situation has been rolled back to DEFCON 4. There are a few enormous indicators that the GOP will negotiate over the debt ceiling. The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank, FreedomWorks, a Koch brothers PAC, and a Murdoch spokesman have all indicated that the GOP will not let the government default due to pressure from the financial sector. Representative Paul Ryan had originally planned to use the debt ceiling negotiations as leverage to cut from social programs including “Obamacare”. Senator Ted Cruz’s antics foiled Ryan’s plot with an obstinate plot of his own. Minority leader Nancy Pelosi along with Senate Majority leader Harry Reid are both perplexed by President Obama’s negotiation tactics during the shutdown. It looks like another “supercommittee” is on the horizon in order to arrive at a “grand bargain”  to resolve the shutdown. Wolf Blitzer actually challenges a Republican on CNN. Senator Tom Coburn claims to be apolitical and says not raising the debt ceiling will not lead to a default. Riiiiiight. The list of what the government considers “non-essential” during the shutdown is appalling. The list of items the government is deeming “essential” is even worse, namely the services and programs that directly affect the lives of politicians. Surprise, surprise. Mechanical bulls are essential, right? If you thought the Citizens United decision was bad, just wait until you hear about the McCutcheon V. FEC case. A US Supreme Court ruling in full favor of McCutcheon and the conservative position could effectively remove all limits on private donations for wealthy individuals and corporations toward political campaigns and PACs. This could possibly lead to the legalization of unthinkable government corruption. Get money out of politics. Visit Wolf-PAC.com! Heed the howl.
