The Young Turks: October 16, 2013

Cenk Uygur hosting from YouTube Space LA. The GOP has been defeated in the government shutdown! Various editorial boards perform a post mortem on the whole ordeal. The major losers coming out of the shutdown are the GOP and its leadership, namely House speaker Boehner. Senator John McCain calls the shutdown “one of the more shameful chapters I’ve seen in the years I’ve spent in the Senate”. Rush Limbaugh thinks the GOP failed in their tactics because they didn’t oppose Obama enough. Senator Ted Cruz holds a press conference saying he will no longer block or delay a deal in the Senate to end the shutdown or a vote on raising the debt ceiling. Even though Cruz is a loser within the general electorate, among the rabid conservative base, he has gained ground. A hilarious wrecking ball parody video featuring Ted Cruz appears online. David Sirota writes an op/ed pointing out that even though polls reflect support for the positions of Occupy Wall Street, they have no representation within the elected political party structure, showing a major shift of the overall political spectrum to the right. Therefore the ending of the shutdown may be a win politically for progressives, but not necessarily on policy matters. Psychiatrist Keith Ablow, a “medical A-team” member on Fox News, overly speculates in his analysis of Obama’s body language and formative background and comes to the laughable conclusion that he views himself as a victim. Cenk predicts that Dr. Ablow is probably a dangerous guy and will eventually be arrested for something in the future. Glenn Greenwald will be teaming up with Jeremy Scahill and Laura Poitras to form a new progressive journalism organization. This is fantastic news for fans of progressive investigative journalism that truly challenges established authority. Pierre Omidyar, the founder of ebay, will be the financier of the upstart. Anna Kooiman of Fox News reports a ridiculous story claiming President Obama was personally funding a muslim museum. She ended up having to backpedal the next day in a rare apology from Fox News over blatantly misleading content. Ten amazing facts about Sir Isaac Newton.

Ana Kasparian joins Cenk for the second hour. Cenk gives member and Indiegogo shoutouts. Former San Diego Mayor Bob Filner pleads guilty to three criminal counts related to the sexual harassment allegations while he was in office. As part of a plea deal he will avoid jail time, but will have to forfeit his pension and undergo mental health treatment. Paige Parkhurst, the second victim in the Maryville, MO rape case, has come forward for the first time. Missouri state officials are now calling for a grand jury investigation in response to the Anonymous hacktivist campaign. There’s an update in the story of the  motorcycle thief shooting by an undercover police officer in Brazil. After tireless fact checking, there is no evidence whether the perpetrator was killed or is still alive. Cenk reads #TYTLive tweets. An Israeli judge makes the insanely insensitive claim that “some girls enjoy being raped”. He later tried to play the disgusting comment off as a joke. He has since lost the support of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his party. 64 Cleveland police officers will be disciplined after two bystanders were killed in a mishandled chase and shooting. The CW cuts a scene depicting a woman masturbating from its show “Reign” despite it containing many other sexual scenes. Is masturbation more taboo than regular sex? Cenk reads #TYTLive tweets. Bad news for bacon lovers. Researchers from Harvard University have found a negative correlation between processed meat and a man’s sperm count. This is only a preliminary finding and requires further study to make any concrete conclusions. Only 8% of the money raised from NFL pink apparel actually goes to breast cancer research.
