Eric Adam's Staged Photo Op With Luigi Mangione Raises Eyebrows
NYC Mayor Eric Adams was seen helping to escort Luigi Mangione alongside police officers in what many are calling a photo op.
- 11 minutes
Yesterday, Luigi Mangione,
the man who allegedly killed
UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson,
was brought to New York, where he'll face
state and federal murder charges.
And there to take advantage of the
spectacle was none other than embattled
[00:00:16]
New York City Mayor Eric Adams,
who decided to join the comically large
police escort behind Mangione.
Now there were dozens of NYPD officers,
FBI agents and other officials.
They were there to greet him in Manhattan,
apparently because they were concerned
[00:00:32]
somebody would attempt
to free Mangione from police custody.
But obviously Adams wasn't there
to prevent a rescue attempt.
He was there for a photo op.
Adams posted another video from
a different angle, where he can clearly
be seen on his own Twitter account.
[00:00:47]
Take a look.
Now asked afterward
why he felt it was necessary to be present
[00:01:04]
when Luigi Mangione arrived to New York.
Adams told reporters,
I was at a conference a few days ago
with the top CEOs, IBM, Deloitte.
It was a room full of CEOs
and government officials in the shooting.
The intentional shooting
and the response after
[00:01:22]
really traumatized the entire industry.
Not only the CEOs, but the employees.
People forget that.
And I wanted to send a strong message
with the police commissioner
that we're leading from the front.
I'm not going to just allow him
to come into our city.
[00:01:38]
I wanted to look him in the eye and state
that you carried out this terrorist
attack, this terrorist act in my city,
the city that people of New York love.
And I wanted to be there
to show the symbolism of that now.
We'll get into more,
including why it's ironic
[00:01:56]
that Adams is there for a perp walk.
But, Jake, what do you make of him
showing up and saying specifically
that the whole industry was shaken
up by this and that's why he did it.
There's so many funny parts to this,
but I'm going to reread what Jordan
just read to you in case you missed it.
[00:02:11]
You carry out
this terrorist act in my city,
the city that the people of New York love.
Yeah, that's because New York is the city.
So. Okay. Way to be eloquent.
[00:02:26]
So so I'm watching this thing
before I figured out why they had
this enormous police presence.
Right.
And I. And I was like, do they think,
like some vigilante CEOs
are going to Jack Ruby him?
What's going on here? Right.
[00:02:43]
And then I read into it and they're like,
no, they're worried
that he's going to get rescued.
I was like, wow, that's the state
the country is in where they were worried
that an assassin is going to be rescued
by the American people, and that's
why they had to bring him in like this.
[00:02:58]
And people on on X are saying like they're
treating him like a villain from Gotham.
Right.
And and that the whole thing
had a super Joker feel to it.
Like, I haven't seen Joker two yet, but
that was straight out of Joker one, right?
[00:03:15]
So I don't they're making
a mistake of overhyping him.
You see what I'm saying?
Not that like it's going to turn him
accidentally turn him into a folk hero
when he feels like this tiny guy needs,
like, 200 guys around him
to make sure that he doesn't
[00:03:30]
get rescued by Joker's allies.
So I don't know, I don't know, I think
it's a bad look for police overall.
And then Adams like trailing like,
hey everybody, look at me, look at me.
I'm here. Right?
We see you, brother. We see you.
[00:03:46]
Just bring it down. Okay?
And if you're wondering why he's
doing that, it's not just about crime.
Manhattan is where the biggest
business interests are centralized.
Like, that's that's where they most live.
Right?
[00:04:02]
And that means tons of super rich folks,
including, of course, most importantly,
the most like the biggest
parts of the financial industry.
So the banking CEOs, etc..
And then he even talked about it.
He's like, I was just at a lunch
with all the see my CEO friends,
[00:04:18]
and then my CEO friends are super excited,
like they're right to be concerned, like
I'm not making light of what happened.
They should definitely get protection.
ET cetera.
And but at the same time,
when you see New York City mayors,
not just Eric Adams acting out like this,
it's because they're not wrong.
[00:04:36]
The power of political power base in New
York is enormously wealthy people from
the business community, and if you don't
cater to them 200%, they'll be furious.
And by the way, what will happen next
is tons of negative articles.
[00:04:52]
Just ask Bill de Blasio like, I mean,
look, I'm not saying Bill de Blasio was
perfect, but whenever I asked people,
why are you so mad at Bill de Blasio?
I tell you, it's in the papers.
It's in the papers.
He was going to the wrong gym.
I'm like, that's what you're
so mad about, right?
[00:05:08]
And it's because the that particular mayor
is more controlled by CEOs
than any mayor in the country.
All right, Jackson, what do you think?
I mean, there's just so much going on
in the country right now.
I think that that analysis of this
is like something
[00:05:24]
out of the Joker is is very true.
And it's been funny watching,
you know, the establishment,
whether that be, you know,
mainstream media news outlets
or just people who are in these consultant
positions, be outraged that there's,
you know, kind of like a lover boy.
Oh, he's so hot fest going on
around the country.
[00:05:42]
I think a lot of that is just the internet
people ingest and obviously not caring
that the health care CEO was slain.
But also, I know that that famous clip
with Laura Ingraham where she was like,
you know, basically it's such a shame
that people are praising this man.
[00:05:58]
And then like 30s later,
she's like, talking about, Daniel Pennie,
and Donald Trump and JD Vance
invite Daniel Pennie to the ball game.
Let's take a picture like, you know.
Yes. You got away with murder.
[00:06:13]
And then also Kyle Rittenhouse.
So, like, there's like.
No, they have no room to,
condemn anybody, for being all over Luigi.
But I think that it's just
a reflection as well
of how unserious society is as a whole.
[00:06:29]
Because, like, even from the election,
there's so much to take from it.
Years and years of Democratic failures,
people just not really
being all that excited
to show up for Kamala for good reasons.
But at the same time, a man like Donald
Trump, who we've been watching
for the last ten years, you know,
America was like, oh, I don't care.
[00:06:45]
I don't care that he's a felon.
I don't care that he tried
to overthrow the government.
I don't care that he lies
every time he opens his mouth.
So I think we're just going to have
a lot more of stuff like this going on
for the next four years.
The country
just really being out of control.
Yeah, yeah.
[00:07:01]
Well, we have more on Adams
and he made it perfectly clear that he is
putting, like Jake said, the CEOs first.
And this was clear from the beginning
of the investigation,
NYPD spared no expense in the hunt
for the assassin of Brian Thompson.
They even sent scuba divers
into the lake in Central Park.
[00:07:20]
Eric Adams made this comment
on the underwater search.
Everywhere is important.
Every place is important,
Adams said, adding a moment later,
it's dark down there, you know.
Yes, brother, we know.
[00:07:35]
We know it's Captain Obvious. I love him.
You want to take it?
The guy is ridiculous. He's embarrassing.
So, look, guys, there's nothing wrong
with protecting CEOs, okay?
But all we want is equality.
Like, give me the same kind of energy when
you're protecting the average citizen.
[00:07:54]
Right.
And to be fair to Eric Adams,
he hasn't been bad on crime.
He's trying and stuff.
But, look, I'm principled, so I'm against
defund the police in terms of a slogan.
I'm against it.
If you're actually cutting funds
that are going to help protect folks,
[00:08:09]
etc., if you're doing it in terms
of bringing more funds into mental health.
Wonderful. ET cetera.
Right.
So but there's a but but we've
been clear here on The Young Turks.
We're not in favor of crime, and we're not
in favor of it when it hits working
class communities like it has in Oakland.
And, by the way, sometimes in New York,
but also, of course,
[00:08:27]
when it hits CEOs as well.
But when they make such a spectacular
show like, okay, somebody gets hurt
in New York, okay, it's it's all right.
It's not.
But when a CEO gets killed, we're just
said, bring out the scuba teams, the Swat
teams and the Joker teams and the FBI.
[00:08:43]
And it's all right, guys. We got it.
We got it.
The CEOs are more important than us.
Stop rubbing our faces in it.
I want to add, when you're talking
about this condemnation of violence
or political violence, there are people
you've seen rush out of the gate
[00:08:59]
to condemn Luigi Mangione and Jackson.
You alluded to people developing
like a cult of personality around him,
finding him attractive.
I saw one funny tweet that said,
now I finally understand
why people write to serial killers
because the guy is objectively handsome.
[00:09:14]
And I think a lot of people sympathize
with what he did because they understand
or maybe even have personal experience
with the private health care industry.
But as the media rushes to put out poll
after poll saying, you know, people
actually like their private insurance.
Well, as we've advocated
on this network for years, when presented
[00:09:32]
with the alternative, a universal system
where they don't have to pay,
they're going to like that more.
But the corporate media,
the mainstream media
will rush out to defend the status quo.
But also when you're talking
about violence,
it is interesting to observe what is
acceptable violence and what isn't.
This they're condemning.
[00:09:48]
Like you pointed out,
Daniel Pennie is okay.
He goes to the private suite of the Army
Navy game with Trump and Vance.
But also, it's okay that there is
a genocide happening now that's justified.
Ukraine fighting back all of the civilians
rushing to create Molotov cocktails
[00:10:07]
to fight back against Russia.
That violence is okay.
Palestinians fighting back. Unacceptable.
Somebody's taking matters
into their own hands.
After a health insurance company
denies claims, which results in tens
of thousands of people dying every year.
[00:10:22]
Responding to that isn't okay.
So it is interesting to observe
where violence is okay and what isn't.
Who is a victim and who isn't okay.
Are you going to make me
add one last thing, Jordan?
Because it's such a good point.
Look, I get it.
[00:10:38]
We treat folks that are richer
with more gravity.
We treat Americans that are closer to us
with more gravity than we do
a foreign interest, etc.
But it is a hell of a thing.
I mean, imagine if they treated
and look again,
we've been principal here, by the way.
[00:10:54]
You know, we're against all violence.
Whether Luigi Mangione does it, whether
Hamas does it or Israel does it, or Russia
does it, we've been principled on it.
Right?
But imagine if we showed the same amount
of concern for a Palestinian child killed
[00:11:10]
in Gaza, as we did for that CEO.
And right now you're thinking
that's unimaginable.
Right. And isn't that super sad?
Over 15,000 kids killed in Gaza,
all of them combined,
didn't get half the sympathy of that CEO.
[00:11:28]
All right.
It goes to show how tribal
we really are as human beings.
And what did Joseph Stalin say?
One death is a tragedy.
A million deaths is a statistic.
You know, so I think we're just
we're just interesting things.
And part of being involved in politics
is learning how to manage ourselves.
[00:11:45]
That's really what it's all about.
Because if conditions are
a certain types of ways we go, we go awry.
And if they're not where we
like to love each other more,
but we're just very tribal creatures.
